Slim holes and drilling without a liquid phase
CBM and shallow wells mostly run slim tools and are often drilled on air or foam. Mud pulse will not work in those conditions, so electromagnetic telemetry is used instead.
Limits of slim hole and gas drilling
- Small hole size — Standard-size tools will not go in the hole; a slim-hole series is required.
- Air, foam or gasified fluid — In air drilling and foam drilling a mud pulse cannot establish a working channel.
- Limited spend per well — System cost and maintenance complexity both have to be kept down.
What we do about it
- 42 mm and 48 mm slim-hole probes, pulsers and battery barrels are available.
- Electromagnetic telemetry replaces mud pulse in air and foam drilling.
- Modular build: routine maintenance is a module swap at the wellsite, with no return to the factory.
